Hey Traders,
My wife’s family has a group text message where they all share pictures and stories.
On Fridays my mother-in-law posts a question for the family to answer.
A few weeks ago she asked, “What is the best Christmas gift that you have ever received?”
I responded quickly: Castle Grayskull from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. (That playset remains truly awesome even 35 years later).
My wife’s 95-year-old grandmother weighed in with a long story that ended, “I still believed in Santa then, so it was magical.”
She forgot that my 10-year-old son was on the text chain.
He quickly replied, “Wait … Santa isn’t REAL!!!”
And just like that, it was over.
My son’s belief in Santa was whisked away … via text message.
SMH.
There is… however… a happy ending to this story.
Mark II has embraced “being a part” of the magic for my younger son Valentino.
It’s been fun, for instance, letting him decide where to move the “Elf on the Shelf” (otherwise known as the bane of my Christmas).
While a piece of the Christmas wonder for him is gone, seeing him embrace making the magic for my 4-year-old has been a joy.
But, Mark, what does this have to do with trading, you say?
Actually, a lot.
You see, too often traders find a strategy that works — but then begin to think it’s perfect and will always be effective.
Like Santa, eventually the truth comes out …
No strategy works forever.
Some traders refuse to believe the truth, get stuck in their ways and become miserable and unsuccessful.
Good traders embrace change and take advantage of it.
As we wrap up 2020, I think we can all agree that this year was NOTHING like the previous decade.
The traders who had a good year (like me) embraced the change …
This is how I was able to develop Little John, that is up over 40% in 7 weeks on a $5,000 account.
I recognized that I could sit and wait for a 12 VIX environment to return …
… or take advantage of the VIX going to 85, and Robinhood traders become whales, one contract at a time.
There is going to be more changes ahead for 2021. It’s probably not going to look like 2020.
So are you going to embrace finding out Santa is not “real” in a physical sense.
Or are you going to understand that we are all Santa when we pass along the joy of seeing a 4-year-old exclaim, “He came! I was on the Nice List!!!”
